The NCAA March madness tournament started yesterday with a host of first round games to watch and enjoy. Of course, with the start of the March Madness Tournament we know that upsets happen frequently and sometimes games end on questionable calls by the officials. This was certainly the case with the SMU vs UCLA game. Late in the fourth quarter, with time winding down, UCLA shot a three-pointer, but the officials signaled that the SMU defender jumped up too soon and grabbed the ball out of the air before it had a chance to touch the rim. This was ruled as goaltending and gave UCLA the automatic three points for the lead. With this, SMU was down one point and raced down the floor for the final shot. To the dismay of the crowd, the final shot by SMU clanked off the front of the rim and fell short. UCLA players, fans, and coaches flooded the floor and celebrated the victory while SMU trudged to the locker room both stunned and defeated.

The other upset that took place was local, as the UAlbany Great Danes took on the Oklahoma Sooners in what looked to be a very lopsided matchup. Well, as one of my favorite sayings goes, the games aren’t played on paper. Now, it’s certainly a good thing that the games aren’t played on paper because UAlbany came out rolling and ended up shocking the Sooners with a last second shot that hit the bottom of the bucket. The crowd went crazy, the bench erupted for the Great Danes, and Oklahoma tried to comprehend how this had happened to them. A #14 seed had beaten a #3 seed to move on to the next round of the tournament; and, as we all know, this was only the first round of the tournament. Now 32 teams remain to fight for the national championship.
